Symbolism and Shark Tattoos

Meaningful Shark Tattoos As representations of ultimate survival, sharks (also known as cuberous sharks, big sharks or box sharks) are ideal for those wanting a tattoo to represent that they are brave, enduring champions of the ecosystem. Symbolically, it speaks to our natural hearts: 1.) you are born perfect, fittest designs (of which we are all proud!) and 2.) whatever life can throw at us, will survive! And don’t think for a second that these tattoo designs are only going to be on the bodies of the strongest, or most feared people!

One of the most popular types of shark tattoos is the jaws of sharks

also known as ‘ship shark’ designs. When fully stretched out, this type of shark tattoo looks very intimidating indeed. What makes them such a formidable visual deterrent is their set of sharp, jagged, hooked mouth. This mouth has the ability to do some real damage when being used to spear fish. These sharks can certainly make any person feel at ease.

As with all sea creatures, there is a long tradition of using mummification to portray the shark as a creature of power and dominance. The idea being that, by having a large predator close by, other threats to the oceans will be hindered, or even wiped out. There is a long tradition of using teeth or stingers to scare away would-be attackers. Now, the jaws shark tattoos convey that same sense of power in a more subtle manner, and not directly to the eyes.

Another popular form of shark tattoos that have long been used in symbolism is the use of the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin is an iconic symbol for many different reasons. It’s a representation of speed and danger; it’s a great way to show the “line in the sand” before entering a battle; it’s a symbol of strength and protection for sailors. In many ways, the use of this particular symbol represents the sailor’s ability to face danger head-on, even if they’re on a narrow flight of life.

Of all the styles of shark tattoos

the best known are the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. The dorsal fins, also referred to as the “D” fins, are usually elongated and tapering. These are the most common fins chosen for a design. The tapering shape of these fins gives them a strong base, which helps them to overcome the formidable jaws of these great sharks. The anal and caudal fins work in similar fashion; however, the anal fins have more tapered tips than the caudal fins.

The great white shark is believed to be responsible for the first recorded case of sharks being used for warfare. This legend states that a great white shark (the same one that’s thought to be responsible for the attack on the Titanic) bit an English sailor on one of its gills. The sailor tried to pry the creature open with his teeth, but the large fish bit him on the head, snapping the tip of his head right off. Though this account isn’t completely reliable, it does give us a pretty good idea of how the creature may have moved through the sea millions of years ago. Many sailors became famous around the world thanks to the legends that followed this great shark. Some of the stories tell of great white sharks devouring ships, sailing on the oceans with their massive jaws open to feast upon any crew that came within range.

There are many other legends surrounding the great white shark, some of which are definitely true. It’s possible that the Great White Shark is related to the clownfish, the most famous cichlid in the world. Clownfishes are known to be aggressive and voracious eaters, which makes sense since the Great White Shark has been mentioned as having similar characteristics. If you’re interested in shark tattoos, you may also want to consider other types of fish, since the Great White Shark may also be a spawn member of the common guppy or wahoo.

Regardless of which type of symbolism you choose for your tattoo, make sure you consult a professional tattoo artist before you get your ink. Tattoos are a personal decision, so you need to choose the symbols and images that you find appealing.
