Part 1 of 2 The traditional process of Maori tattooing Ta Moko Waka Huia TVNZ Here we show the tattooing of the legs of Chris Winitana, Tūhoe, Tūwharetoa, in the way of the warrior ancestors of yore. Each line holds a chant, each cut a song, each form represents a tear, the manifestation of aroha. Tune in your ears to his explanations of how the warrior’s tattoo connects to the spiritual pathway signposted by the female deities of old. From the spiritworld of Rarohenga to The Beam of the Moon, to that of Matariki and onwards to the Threshold of Rehua. – 24 July 2011
