06/28/2007: Death and Orpheus
During trip No. 2, Kevin finished the design of my forearm by adding Death and Orpheus to the mix. Death, Dream’s older sister, stands back to back with him, cradling his infant son Orpheus in her arms. The pose is reminiscent of a pieta, which is fitting considering that Dream eventually has to kill Orpheus. Of course, that takes place thousands of years later, long after Orpheus is a baby. But that’s the cool thing about a tattoo – it doesn’t have to be a direct translation of a specific moment in the story. It draws together motifs and themes from several different arcs. At any rate, Orpheus has a symbolic red slash at his throat, and on the other side of my arm Dream’s hands are dripping with blood.
